but we begin with the extreme weather across the country this holiday weekend. monsoon rains slamming the southwest, at least one death reported in the chaos of the burning man festival in nevada. tens of thousands trapped, told to conserve water and food. thick mud making it difficult to get out. even stars like chris rock among those fleeing the desert. downpours reaching across the normally hot and dry region. roads turning into rivers near the las vegas strip. authorities are now investigating a drowning death in the city. and the calendar may say september, but it feels like the beginning of august for millions along the east coast, as the heat builds up over the next few days. major cities reaching well into the 90s. we'll have the forecast in just a moment. we start with the flooding in the west. abc's zohreen shah leads us off. >> this is insane. >> reporter: tonight, those heavy monsoon rains wreaking havoc in the west now turning possibly deadly.

in west las vegas valley, authorities launching an investigation after fire crews found a possible drowning victim tangled in debris. and tonight, authorities say they're investigating at least one death at burning man, the annual counterculture arts festival in the black rock desert north of reno, nevada. tens of thousands stranded after major flooding cut off the festival's soleigate away for most motor vehicles and emergency crews. >> they shut the water down. i'm helping to pull power cables outs of the ground. >> reporter: the event ending tomorrow, but it's unclear when everyone will be able to leave. officials urging attendees to conserve water, food, and fuel. >> people are walking out. i have friends in our camp that hiked out yesterday. >> reporter: so far, the only way out, trudging at least five miles in the mud to a paved road. >> we walked three miles. we have five more. >> reporter: celebrity dj diplo sharing these posts showing him and chris rock making the journey. before negotiating a ride from a fan.

across the region, flash flooding closing down the i-15 highway south of las vegas. >> this is crazy. >> reporter: and turning this busy intersection into a raging river. this bus appears to narrowly miss a submerged car. the storm also making hazardous conditions on lake tahoe this holiday weekend. >> some dramatic images coming out of the west tonight. zohreen shah joining us now. what is the latest now for those attendees stuck in the burning man festival? >> reporter: so that festival officially ends tomorrow, but i just touched base with someone who is there right now, and they expect to be there until tuesday at this rate. tonight, we're learning president biden has been briefed on the situation at burning man. whit. >> all right, thank you. that flooding is just part of the weather extremes being felt across the country this holiday weekend. let's bring in meteorologist leslie lopez from our station kabc in las vegas. millions are also facing a dangerous heat wave. >> reporter: that's right.

and it looks like this upcoming heat wave is sticking around for much of the upcoming week and parts of the northeast. they're just starting to feel the heat. the center of the country is dealing with the worst of it. the heat is intensifying for the labor day holiday along much of the i-95 corridor. the heat challenging records from the upper midwest to the northeast over the next several days and the first week of september featuring multiple 90 degree days from d.c. to philly and new york city. relief moves in for many by the end of the week, however, more unseasonably hot conditions will move in for the middle of the month. in parts of the south and west. whit. >> thank you. great to have you with us tonight. turning now to the urgent manhunt for an escaped convicted murdering spotted this weekend on a home security camera taken less than two miles from the prison where he escaped from outside philadelphia. he was just sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his ex-girlfriend. here's abc's jay o'brien. tonight, pennsylvania law enforcement officials say this

is new video of convicted murderer moving through the bushes outside a home near the prison he escaped. >> we believe we are getting closer to locating this suspect at this time. >> reporter: the chester county district attorney's office releasing this black and white home security camera footage hoping for the public's help in tracking down the 34-year-old sentenced not even two weeks ago to life in prison for stabbing his ex-girlfriend multiple times in front of her children. >> remain inside. lock your doors. lock your cars. he is still considered an extremely dangerous individual. >> this is right behind our house. >> reporter: authorities using drones and helicopters to search for the suspect in a heavily wooded residential area less than two miles from the chester county prison. >> i'm putting together a soccer goal for my daughter, and you know, a state trooper that has tactical gear on with a machine gun walks through my front yard.

it's just very surreal. >> reporter: officials believe the man who is also wanted for murder in his native brazil may have tried to break in to at least two homes. >> possible sighting of the prisoner. a male subject walking northbound. >> reporter: local, state, and federal authorities now involved in the search, warning residents to stay on the lookout just ahead of labor day. >> please remain vigilant with your observations. especially given the long holiday weekend where people may be out of town. it's very likely the suspect could attempt to break into one of those homes. >> reporter: and whit, locals are taking this seriously tonight, even a tourist attraction there, the sprawling longwood gardens, is on lockdown, posting a bright red alert on their website saying they are closed as the search continues. whit. >> an important warning. jay o'brien for us tonight, thank you. >> tonight, family and friends are mourning the death of a texas college student killed this weekend in what appears to be a random act of gun violence. wes smith, a junior at tcu and past member of the football

team, died after being shot three times on a ft. worth street. officials say smith does not appear to have known the suspect who is now charged with his murder. here's abc's jaclyn lee. >> reporter: tonight, a community in mourning over the fatal shooting of texas christian university junior wes smith killed by an apparent stranger outside a bar as he finished his second week of school. >> it hit hard, it hit hard. i think it's hard for a parent to lose their child in any way. >> reporter: according to a fort worth police arrest warrant, surveillance cameras show the suspect matthew purdy appearing to speak to smith after 1:00 a.m. friday. moments later, police say, purdy opening fire. the suspect fleeing but later arrested by officers in a nearby parking lot. the warrant says the suspect admitted to not knowing smith and shooting him three times, allegedly telling police he shot smith "in the head because he wanted to make sure he was dead."

the warrant says purdy also said he would have shot others if he hadn't run out of ammunition. tonight smith's family saying in a statement, "wes was truly an amazing and loving son, brother, cousin, and friend to so many. we are heartbroken by his passing. according to the arrest warrant, when officers asked the suspect why he shot smith, he was unable to give a clear answer. that suspect is now facing a murder charge and is behind bars tonight. >> jaclyn lee, thank you. overseas now to the war in ukraine. officials tell abc news the u.s. is expected to send depleted uranium rounds to ukraine as part of a new military aid package. experts say they could be a game changer on the battlefield, capable of piercing russian armor, but they have come under criticism. abc's britt clennett from ukraine tonight. >> reporter: tonight, a potential game changer in ukraine's bloody battle to drive russian forces out of its territory. abc news sources confirming for the first time the u.s. will

likely send ukraine depleted uranium rounds in the next aid package, munitions that can be fired from american abrams tanks, which are expected to be on the battlefield soon. with ukraine's counteroffensive making slow gains in the south, experts say these shells are extremely effective at piercing the thick armor of russian tanks. >> it's very effective as an anti-tank munition. that's because it's very dense, it's a very dense metal and upon impact with an enemy tank, it has a self igniting, fire-producing effect. so it's very useful to punch against enemy armor. >> reporter: while these types of munitions have been criticized by some groups the un's nuclear watchdog saying there's no proof it "poses a radiological hazard to populations." the news comes as russia unleashed another drone attack overnight, seen damaging a port in the odesa region, critical to exporting grain. two people were injured.

shootings at or near friday night high school football games around the country as families gear up for this year's season. in west baton rouge, a 16-year-old was killed and a 28-year-old woman injured in a shooting just outside the port allen high school stadium. in chicago, two teens injured, one critically at a shooting at the end of the game. and in toledo -- >> there is a football game right now. >> reporter: police say this 911 call possibly thwarted another high school football game shooting. body camera footage showing the arrest of a 19-year-old armed suspect. and tonight, that suspect is charged with illegally carrying a firearm onto school grounds. toledo police praising the woman that tipped them off, saying she saw something and said something. whit. >> alex presha reporting for us tonight. thank you. tributes are pouring in for former new mexico governor and ambassador to the u.n. bill richardson. the 75-year-old statesman may be best remembered for his unofficial efforts to help free dozens of americans wrongfully detained in other countries,

served as the nation's ambassador to the united nations and energy secretary. richardson earned multiple nominations for the nobel peace prize. he led nuclear talks with north korea and brokered a truce in darfur. richardson also made history, as the first hispanic governor of new mexico and the first hispanic to seek the democratic party nomination for president, in 2008, campaigning in english and spanish. gender reveal for their baby, a small plane flew overhead dropping pink smoke, but then the left wing folded and the plane went down. the pilot later died at a hospital. police are now reviewing video of the crash as part of their investigation. and police in louisiana are searching for an arsonist, that's after officials said the largest wildfire in state history was set on purpose. the tiger island fire broke out in southwestern louisiana on august 22nd. it's burned more than 48 square miles and damaged or destroyed at least 20 homes and structures. when we come back, the new cdc warning about potentially deadly bacteria in coastal waters.
